Do Dalí in Bruges

Half way through my delightful day in Bruges I stumbled upon an exhibit: Salvador Dalí, Marquis de Púbol at the Gallery Xpo in the belfry.
Salvador Dalí is a genius to me. I've admired his work and mindset since my very early teens. He was eccentric, and I love that. I love his choices and his attitude. I would have loved to know him, to breathe the air he did, to be intoxicated by him during his richest years. To have been a victim lured into his shameless self promotion. To have witnessed him probe the wildly irrational. To have envied the man who confidently said, "I am in a permanent state of intellectual erection".

I must admit that Salvador Dalí makes me a little bit uncomfortable as I am more and more magnetically drawn to his work. It is often said that he insisted on his Arab lineage. Maybe we're connected! As the years go by I see certain real life people in situations similar to his surreal depictions, in all their grotesqueness.

Where do I draw my reality line? When does my surreal world take over my real one? Over the last couple of years I'm finding it harder and harder to define. Not that that bothers me, but it does intrigue me. I am aware of it, but neither fight it nor wish it away. My reality with a veil of surrealism works for me. I guess I just don't like what I see anymore when the veil does come off.

More Dalí pix here.
And if you know/are interested in/curious about Bruges, more pix here and here.
